Meet Fariba

Fariba was born and raised in Kabul, Afghanistan. Her childhood was not happy, but she kept a goal of becoming a doctor or journalist. Her parents did not allow her to attend school, and she married at a young age. She was expected to cook and clean for her in-laws who kept an unattainable standard, which added to her difficult life.

Fariba was widowed in 2017 and moved to Turkey with her four children, where she spent nine years working late nights in a restaurant and days as a housekeeper. In October 2023 she and two of her children migrated to the US and settled in Rhode Island. The move was an opportunity to be happy and build a bright future for her family. The first few weeks were difficult, but she took English classes at Dorcas and joined the Entrepreneur Program for Afghan women at Beautiful Day, where she is able to do what she loves: cook, and now possibly open a catering business. In addition, she enrolled in Beautiful Day’s Job Training program.

Fariba graduated this month and says she is grateful for her time at Beautiful Day. Now when she passes by the Beautiful Day building she says she throws kisses at it!
