Connecting communities

Beautiful Day’s markets program introduces adult refugees to a wide variety of front-of-house training experiences critical for a career in customer service or retail. The intensive opportunities to practice English and interact with the public are a big confidence-booster and develop skills relevant to so many positions in the American job market.

Program Details

Our 24-week market training program combines classroom and experiential learning. The primary component is experiential as participants accompany market managers and sell our products at one of seven farmers markets around the state, or to demo BD products at local grocery stores. Participants also gather for a weekly paid workshop at BD headquarters to supplement their learning about marketing, sales, customer service, and point-of-sale technology. It is also an important time to debrief and answer questions from their latest work experiences. As individuals grow more comfortable with the work, they take on additional responsibilities, mentor a BD highschooler, or ultimately manage a new market on their own.

Volunteers contribute to the experience by providing additional social connections and individual insights when joining us for field trips that introduce trainees to new perspectives on the Rhode Island job market.

OUR PARTICIPANTS

Our focus is on working-age adult refugees who speak some English, have some formal education, can drive or are working on their driver’s license, and who are looking to stretch themselves and expand their career opportunities. Cohorts include students in high school or college, and working parents with multiple jobs. We keep our cohorts small to provide intensive support and maximize training opportunities at the markets.

SUPPORT AND OUTCOMES

Each participant graduates with a signed certificate recognizing their achievements and skills. Beautiful Day continues to assist them until they have found a job. We’re especially proud of the way this program interconnects practical job training with community education. The happy bustle of local farmers markets provides a wonderful environment to bring people together through a hand-made product. Many beautiful connections have started at farmers markets and more than one have led to permanent jobs.
