What is the markets program?

This 10-week program (10 hours/week, 100 hours total) is designed for adults who are newly-arrived in the United States, are moderately fluent English Language Learners, who want a broad experience interacting with the American public in preparation for careers in front-of-house hospitality and customer service.

Program Details

This program affords participants opportunities to practice English in an interactive, fast-paced, diverse environment and to learn soft skills like teamwork, initiative, organization, and responsibility as well as hard skills related to point of sale technology. The format consists of a 2-hour/week class and an 8-hour/week hands-on component where trainees work with an experienced vendor to demo at stores and sell at one of seven farmers’ markets. Trainees are paid $15.50/hour to attend both the class and the farmers’ market.

optimal canidates for the program

A case manager provides assistance with resume writing, interviewing techniques, and overcoming barriers. The program does not guarantee job placement. The ideal candidate should be referred through a resettlement, adult education, or other social service agency where they are enrolled in ESL or GED classes and receiving job placement services. Limited positions are available. Priority is given to candidates who are recent arrivals in the US with appropriate fluency level but minimal US workplace literacy.
