COLLECTIVE SUCCESS THROUGH COMMUNITY INVESTMENT

Beautiful Day’s Entrepreneurship Program is part of a statewide initiative involving several non-profits to support a large group of Afghans who arrived in Rhode Island following the 2021 US military withdrawal from Afghanistan. Our specific focus was to help women with complex resettlement needs build stronger networks and take steps towards their goals for life in this country.

Program Details

Key objectives for the initiative are to build trust with the Afghan community, and provide a welcoming space for Afghan women to gather and avoid isolation, engage with volunteers from the local community, and practice job-readiness skills. We do this by exploring food entrepreneurship ideas and connecting with individuals and businesses throughout RI’s diverse food industry. Their Afghan Women Catering (AWC) start-up grew out of this endeavor with a menu researched, designed, and tested by the participants in partnership with BD’s team. In year two, our expanded cohort continues to develop cross-cultural skills while investigating other economic ventures, and different ways to earn income.

Our meetings are structured to offer classroom elements, while prioritizing hands-on time in a commercial kitchen through a group cooking activity.  We emphasize the development of soft skills like: improving spoken English, time management, navigating public transportation, managing childcare, initiating communication, building confidence, and expanding community relationships. Hard skills are also taught: food safety, sourcing supplies and pricing products, customer service, and resume building.

AWP PARTICIPANTS

While Rhode Island has welcomed Afghan refugees for years, most in this program arrived after the Taliban takeover in 2021. They were forced to flee because they and their families had been part of the effort to reshape their country as a democratic nation. The women come from several of the diverse Afghan ethnicities and speak either Pashto or Dari.

Nearly all are primary caregivers in their household; some are single parents.

SUPPORT AND OUTCOMES

A strong team surrounds this effort, including two Afghan staff, two translators, plus committed volunteers, partners, and guidance from all the Beautiful Day departments. Together we’ve created an environment of collaborative and generative learning. Case management is focused on supporting the women’s needs – like obtaining a driver’s license – and makes a positive contribution to the success of the entire family.

By the end of its second year we expect most participants will be ready to either enter the job market or will have developed some alternative ways to generate income through cooperative work or cottage industries.
