Meet Zohra

Zohra was born in Pakistan, but her family originates from
Afghanistan. Before her birth, her family moved to Quetta,
Pakistan, to seek treatment for her older brother, who has a
disability. It is in Quetta that Zohra and one of her brothers
were born.

In Pakistan, Zohra studied and excelled in English, and taught
young children how to speak basic English.
After Zohra's father was resettled in Rhode Island, she and the
rest of the family arrived in September 2024. Zohra grew up in
a conservative Muslim community and experienced some
culture shock when moving to the U.S., especially regarding
the way American children dressed.

Zohra, now in 10th grade, learned about Beautiful Day’s job
training program for refugee youth from Dorcas International,
the resettlement agency. It is here that Zohra made her first
friends in Providence and started interning at Farm Fresh.
“Everyone is so friendly on Beautiful Day. I am learning how to
communicate appropriately with my manager and customers,
file taxes, and manage my money.”

Zohra enjoys hanging out with her friends, drinking Boba tea,
playing badminton, and reading books like “Rich Dad Poor Dad:
What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money That the Poor
and Middle Class Do Not!” Zohra's favorite subjects are biology
and math, and she hopes to one day become a neurologist.
