Meet Tshibamb
Before coming to the United States, Tshibamb pictured it: big, beautiful, full of possibilities. His wife and two stepchildren were resettled in Rhode Island first. After a lengthy and rigorous family-reunification process, Tshibamb was finally able to join them.
Tshibamb was born in Lubumbashi, the second-largest city in DR Congo, before moving to Kinshasa in 2010. While living in the capital city, he managed an emergency health center, sold medicine, and helped people living on the streets. He also served as a pastor in a Pentecostal church, a role he remains passionate about. He continues to preach in French and Swahili at a church in Providence where some other Beautiful Day participants also attend.
Now that he is adjusting to life in the United States, Tshibamb continues to see many opportunities, but also acknowledges the challenges. He is getting used to the cold weather and feels that family life here is less communal than in the Congo. “Still,” he laughs, “I will adapt.”
Tshibamb says he’s ready to take any job he can to support his family. He also wants to return to school to study medicine. He dreams of becoming a pediatrician because, in his own words, “Children are fundamental to life and are the foundation of this world.”
