Meet Karima

Meet Karima

Karima was born in Afghanistan, where she worked as a teacher in Kabul. Karima taught
Dari, a dialect of Persian and the most commonly spoken language in Afghanistan, at a
girls’ elementary school for 35 years. Her husband worked for Care International as a
supervisor.

In November 2024, Karima and her husband arrived in Rhode Island. Karima enjoys
Providence but finds it especially hard to be away from her brother and sister, who are
still in Afghanistan.

If you met Karima, she would happily show you pictures from around the world of her
wildly accomplished family, and you would see how her eyes light up. Two daughters
studied in Italy (MBA in Rome, Urban Planning in Florence) and now live in Germany. A
third daughter (Data Science) lives in the Netherlands. Her son (MA in Architecture in
Rome) works at the Toronto airport and recently came for a short visit.

Karima is enrolled in our Granola Production Program, while also taking English classes
at the Refugee Dream Center. She hopes to find a job where she can work part-time and
not always be on her feet.

Karima didn't want her portrait featured, but helped us pick out this view from Beautiful
Day. Karima says the image represents how much she loves working here, and that it's a
beautiful place full of beautiful people.
